Artist Statement:

Narration is a chief constant in all my paintings. Initially attracted to figurative works, ranging from Old Masters to Lucian Freud, my interest lies in a translation of personal history, pop culture, and circumstances engaging in my relationship to society. Human beings represent beings of complexity, starting from the moments of birth reacting to new experiences. They encompass attitude, personality, rationality, and routine. They fulfill a strategy of displacement and observation. They are a constant enigma and vary individually.

Through the process of working, these paintings have helped me study the relationships not only between the physicality of the paint and the coarseness of the canvas, but the weight of knowledge in an observer’s window of human interaction. The tension between subject matter and the rhythm of colors and shapes are extremely vital to the piece, often altering the scheme portrayed. Images are simplified with the blocks of color to create a textured reality that is sympathetic to our own senses and familiarity. The dialogue between the revealed image and the fundamental psychology provide the steady motivation in my work.
